His topic was "The Evolution of the Community College in A m e r i c a . " F o r the second c o n s e c u t i v e y e a r , Tom has been appointed to s e r v e d on the J o i n t S u b c o m m i t t e e on V o c a t i o n a l - T e c h n i c a l and C a r e e r Education. This c o m m i t t e e c o n s i s t s of d e l e g a t e s , s e n a t o r s and e d u c a t o r s in V i r g i n i a and is c h a i r e d by D e l e g a t e Edythe C. H a r r i s o n f r o m N o r f o l k. In a d d i t i o n , Tom will s e r v e as a b o a r d m e m b e r of the P e n i n s u l a YMCA, Hampton B r a n c h . He, along with a p p r o x i m a t e l y ten o t h e r s , will be among t h e f i r s t b o a r d m e m b e r s to s e r v e for the Hampton B r a n c h. R e c e n t l y , A l t r i c e Walden and L a r r y Lewis (both of the D e v e l o p m e n t a l Studies D e p a r t m e n t ) talked to the R i c h n e c k E l e m e n t a r y School F a c u l t y in Newport News. The topic of the d i s c u s s i o n was "The I m p o r t a n c e of T e a c h i n g Study S k i l l s to A l l - A g e S t u d e n t s . " The audience was e n t h u s i a s t i c and it was r e c o m m e n d e d that a p r o g r a m s i m i l a r to this be p r e s e n t e d to o t h e r f a c u l t i es of the school d i s t r i c t. J o h n n i e Simpson (Developmental Studies) r e c e n t l y gave a p r e s e n t a t i o n at the E a s t e r n Regional ACCTion C o n f e r e n c e held in N o r f o l k . The t i t l e was " L e a r n i n g and Study S k i l l s : P r o v i d i n g an I n t e g r a t e d A p p r o a c h to D e v e l o p m e n t a l E d u c a t i o n . " D e n i s e N o r m a n ( P e r s o n n e l / P a y r o l l ) has been c h o s e n a B u s i n e s s T e am L e a d e r for the P e n i n s u l a H e a r t A s s o c i a t i o n . W. Lee B a r n e s , Vice P r e s i d e n t , F i r s t V i r g i n i a Bank of T i d e w a t e r , is the C h a i r m a n.
