a r c h i v e s Virginia Business Magazine Praises TNCC According to the December issue of Virginia Business Magazine, "Thomas Nel-son Community College is a pace setter for the state. ...Indeed, TNCC's programs...are among the best reasons for any company to consider doing busi-ness on the Peninsula." The magazine devotes four articles to the "High-Energy Potential on the Vir-ginia Peninsula," and in all four TNCC is praised for its programs and leadership in the region. One of the articles, which focuses upon Thomas Nelson's leadership role in developing a high tech workforce, reports that "TNCC sets the standard in Vir-ginia...." A reprint of one of the articles is included in this issue of Flagstaff. To those faculty and staff who are working on one of the principal com-mittees, I want you to know that I appreciate the numerous hours you are devoting to studying our institution and your efforts in helping our college plan its immediate future through the 1990s. With the ultimate goal of the self-study report being to strengthen and give direction to Thomas Nelson Community College, I look forward to your analysis and evaluation of both our strengths and weaknesses. My original promise is a standing agreement: each recommendation, sug-gestion, and college proposal will receive a response from the Planning and Implementation Committee. The college congratulates and recognizes Chief Roosevelt Hamlin for receiv-ing the United States Army Reserve's Meritorious Service Medal which was presented to him last weekend at Fort Belvoir in Northern Virginia. The medal was conferred on Chief Hamlin for his superior meritorious service from March 1,1991 to June 1,1993 as the 300th Area Support Group's First Sergeant. The commanding general has only issued 3-4 of these medals during his command. The medal recognized First Sergeant Hamlin's demonstrated outstanding achievement and devotion to duty which was in keeping with the highest tradi-tions of the military service and reflected great credit upon himself, his unit, the 310 TAACOM, and the United States Army Reserve. Chief Hamlin has since been promoted to the rank of Army Sergeant Major. Congratulations for an honor well deserved! Institutional Research Office Restructured Quanty Promoted Dr. Templin announced this week the reorganization of the Office of Institu-tional Research to the Office of Institutional Research, Planning, Institutional Effectiveness, and Grants. The new organizational structure recognizes changes that have evolved since 1987 when several new activities, including managing a $1 million per year grants program and a comprehensive planning and institutional effective-ness program were initiated. Dr. Michael Quanty has been promoted to Director and is responsible to the president for overall management of the office. Thanks Congratulations! by Dean Calver
